Bird eyeing bright pink pomegranate. Painted with ink and watercolour on rice paper.
Pomegranates (zakuro ザクロ or 石榴 shijiu) have a positive meaning in Japan and in China. They are a symbol of fertility and abundance. Gifting pomegranates or their images is traditionally considered a wishing to have many children and an abundant home.
Plump birds often symbolise rich harvest and prosperity. As if saying that there is enough food not just for the family to eat but even to fatten up the birds.
