Pink magnolias. Hand-painted with ink and watercolour on rice paper. Mounted on backing paper for framing.
SYMBOLISM OF IMAGES
In Japanese and Korean art magnolias are associated with the concept of 'mono no aware' - the impermanence of beauty. Just like cherry blossoms, they bloom in early spring and quickly lose their beauty with the change of seasons. In Japan, magnolia trees are often seen in Buddhist temples, where large bright flowers are used to focus during meditation.
In Korea, magnolia trees were treasured for their ability to bloom in harsh weather conditions. They came to symbolise hope and resistance.
In Toronto (Canada), magnolia trees bloom in early spring, while gloomy skies and cold weather are still very much an every day occurrence.
