Irises. Hand-painted with ink and watercolour on handmade Japanese washi paper. Washi has a pleasant off-white colour, not quite visible on the photos. Mounted on backing paper for of framing.

 

SYMBOLISM OF IMAGES
Iris flowers (菖蒲 – shōbu in Japanese) are traditionally associated with gracious heart and perseverance, they are believed to ward off evil spirits. Originally, small wild irises were cultivated during Edo period. There are now hundreds if not thousands of different varieties and colours. They are used in ikebana and grown in gardens. 

 

ARTWORK
The painting is signed, sealed, wet-mounted on backing rice paper and ready to be framed or mounted on a silk scroll. Please use acid-free adhesives when framing. The painting is manually cut, please leave a few mm error margin for dimensions. Colours may differ due to differences in devices.
