Sakura is a national flower of Japan, it's a symbol of spring and fleeting beauty. The Japanese tradition of cherry blossom viewing is popular in many countries. It's very romantic and beautiful. The calligraphy inscription is a haiku poetry by Kobayashi Issa:
花の陰
赤の他人は
なかりけり
[hana no kage / aka no tanin wa / nakari keri]
which translates as:
Under the cherry blossoms
strangers are not
really strangers.
