Bamboo and rocks painted with ink on rice paper. Both subjects form a part of classical Chinese painting. In Japanese culture, images of rocks or suiseki (水石) have hundreds of years of history, they are related to zen Buddhism, and there are many symbolic interpretations. Rocks are crucial elements of the dry garden landscaping, where they are selected for their shape. Ryoan-ji rock garden in Kyoto is probably the best known example of dry garden.
Bamboo is a symbol of good luck in Japan, as well as moral integrity, modesty, tenacity, and strong character. Symbol of a person who can withstand hardships.
